Starting nursery

Attendance at a nursery school or in a nursery class gives children a valuable introduction to school. It allows them to develop their skills and to be part of a large group of children of their own age in a happy and relaxed atmosphere.

You should start thinking about which nursery or early years unit you would like your child to go to when they are two years old.

If your child was born between September 1, 2013 and August 31, 2014, they should start reception in the 2018/19 school year.

The actual age at which children can start will depend on the number of places available but will usually not be before the beginning of the term after their third birthday.

For children of nursery age a place in an EYU may be either full or part-time. If you wish for your child to be considered for a nursery place at an EYU you should contact the school when your child reaches the age of two.


Ideally, yes. They need to be able to independently use the toilet, pull up and down their clothes and wipe themselves. We understand that toilet training can be a difficult time. You can find help here:

There are expectations where we do allow children in nappies, please speak to nursery staff.

Settling in is an individual process, done according to needs of the child. Some children settle in easily, others take a bit longer. We do also take into account the needs of the parents (e.g. working, smaller children). It can take from a few days to a few weeks. Please see our settling policy for more information.

If your child has a part time place, they have fruit snacks openly available all day. The children can also ask for milk and they can have a small bottle of milk. We encourage the children to be as independent as they can, and feed themselves.

If your child has a full time place, they will also eat lunch at school. They eat in the classroom. This is a selection from a menu which changes termly. See an example here:


We encourage them to be independent, and they are able to pour their own drinks, cut their own food, with adult support if needed.

In the excitement of the day, accidents do happen. We will treat the injury; fill a form (which is given to the parent at the end of the day), and ensure the child is safe. If the injury is more severe, or it is a head injury, the parent will be called. Please encourage your child to tell an adult if they are hurt. All the early years’ staff have paediatrician first aid training.

All children have a ‘special book’ which is a scrapbook of work and pictures from the child’s time in nursey. You can ask to see this at any time, and we encourage you to send in anything special they have done at home.

Parents/carers can bring the child in to the classroom and stay for 15 minutes at the start of the day, and this is an ideal time to talk to your child’s key worker or teacher. You can also phone to make an appointment with the teacher. We have termly parents meetings and an end of year report.

Nursery staff are highly trained and experienced in working with children with additional needs. We have SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) who works closely with the staff. We have a speech and language therapist working in the school, and we have additional staff trained in speech and language support.

Come to Toy Library (Tuesdays at 1.30pm) so that they can get used to the environment. Encourage your child to become more independent, so that they can feed themselves and use the toilet. Start to let them dress themselves so that they are comfortable with zips and fastenings. Talk to them about how exciting it will be! They will have a fantastic time at nursery!
